Why do I need an arboricultural consultant anyway..?

A so called ‘BS5837 tree survey‘ is an inspection of the trees on and adjacent to your site of proposed development, which is compliant with British Standard 5837 (2012). This is a lot less technical and complicated than it might sound. In truth, it is a index of the trees by their characteristics, including for example; species, height, girth, spread and condition. The only category that might be unfamiliar to you is the tree’s retention category and something called an RPA. These two things dictate the level of constraint on your development. A better quality tree will have a higher retention categorization and require better justification for it’s loss or any impact upon it. An RPA, or root protection area, is a calculated minimum of area around the tree, that your council will look to see is retained and protected.

The survey then, serves two purposes. (1), to highlight any constraints to your development, and (2), to inform and allow your planning authority to make an objective assessment of your application from the view of its impact on good quality trees.
