When can an initial bat assessment be undertaken?

Scoping Bat Surveys are day time inspections that can be undertaken any time of the year and typically look for strong evidence of bat occupation or the bats themselves. Signs of occupation sought during an initial bat survey are e.g. droppings, bits of prey, scratchings, urine stains and dead bat carcasses, amongst other things. As a consequence of bat surveys and the bat report’s recommendations, a detailed bat mitigation strategy may be required by both the LPA and Natural England. In the video below, bat survey consultants Martin O’Connor, Polly Booth and Mark Best, survey a barn conversion in Cheshire for bat dropping, bits of prey and evidence of activity. Looks like bats have been using the site for some time! This was a visit to a known roosting site, where Arbtech helped secure the client a planning consent to demolish a barn (and bat roost) under license, and re construct a bat loft elsewhere on the site. The bat survey roost visit was a post development check, a condition of the license, to ensure the mitigation for the loss of the original roost was still in place and effective.
