Bat Emergence Survey

Bat Emergence Surveys from £899: All bats in the UK are protected species; a Natural England license is therefore required by the Wildlife and Countryside Act to disturb bats and bat habitat e.g. bat roosts and other features bats use for foraging, or commuting. At Arbtech, our Bat Consultants are Natural England licensed bat workers and able to undertake bat emergence surveys throughout the UK.

Bat reports come in two forms; on the basis of either, initial or Bat Scoping Surveys, or alternatively so-called ‘dusk/dawn’, ‘nocturnal’ or ‘Bat Emergence Surveys‘.

Phase 1 bat surveys lead into emergence bat surveys

Initial, or ‘Bat Scoping Surveys’ are inspections that can be undertaken any time of the year and typically look for strong evidence of bat occupation or the bats themselves. All of Arbtech’s bat survey reports are undertaken and produced compliant to the Bat Conservation Trust’s Bat Survey Good Practice Guidelines (2007).

However, the results of a bat scoping survey may trigger nocturnal, or Bat Emergence Surveys. These surveys are carried out by a minimum of two bat ecologists (this is a stipulation of the Bat Conservation Trust) and are normally undertaken twice, roughly one week apart. The bat emergence surveys normally take in at least one dusk emergence survey and at least one dawn swarming survey, to provide an accurate picture of the bat species using the site and the level and nature of the bat activity. Sound recording equipment and time expansion software is used to distinguish between bat species and helps the bat ecologist produce a report of the bat emergence survey which is submitted to the Local Planning Authority as part of the planning application.

Activity surveys can result in a need for bat mitigation

As a consequence of bat emergence survey and report recommendations, a detailed bat mitigation strategy may be required by both the LPA and Natural England. At Arbtech, our expert ecologists and licensed bat handlers are capable of undertaking all types of bat survey and report to bat conservation guidelines, and administering the Natural England licence application process.
